在沙翁所有的作品里，《哈姆雷特》或許是最受爭議的一部，也是最受注目的一部。無論你在人生的哪一個階段，當你經歷了一場豐富而深刻的精神生活，當你提升了自己的人格，重新發現了一個全新的自我，你總是能在〈哈姆雷特〉里找到一些你會覺得那似乎就應是屬于永恒與不朽的東西。在很大的層面上，它描述的是一種極其原始的杯具，人的杯具。
這個戲劇中有一段十分經典的關于死亡的臺詞：
生存或毀滅，這是個必答之問題：是否應默默的忍受坎苛命運之無情打擊，還是應與深如大海之無涯苦難奮然為敵，并將其克服。此二抉擇，就竟是哪個較崇高?
