茱蒂從小就一直生活在孤兒院里，是她不得不負擔起許多沉重的工作，體會不到普通女孩擁有的家庭樂趣。但是有一天，有一位好心的先生決定資助她上大學，徹底改變了她的生活。茱蒂心里十分感謝這先生，發自內心的堅持每一段時間寫信給這位先生。由于這位先生不知何名，但是特別高，茱蒂便叫這位先生“長腿先生”。
茱蒂對外界的一切都十分感興趣，對未知的事物充滿了好奇。盡管是一件微不足道的小事，茱蒂也能從中找到樂趣。茱蒂為了能與他人溝通，便努力地讀書，汲取知識。在每一封信中都與長腿先生分享自己大學生活的趣事與煩惱。茱蒂在信中無論自己的缺點還是優點都毫無保留的告訴長腿叔叔。因為他把長腿叔叔當成了她唯一的親人，她珍惜這個親人，也珍惜這來之不易的生活，心中充滿了感激。
