相傳在很久以前，金沙江邊一個聚居在密林深處的傣族村寨，因樹林起火，村民處在被大火吞沒的危難之中，一個名叫李良的傣家漢子，為保護村莊，不畏危險，沖出火網(wǎng)，從金沙江里挑來一桶桶江水，潑灑山火。經(jīng)過一天一夜的勞累，山火終于被潑滅了，村民得救，李良因為勞累把汗流干了，渴倒在山頭上。村民打來清水給李良解渴，但他喝了九十九挑水也解不了渴。后來，李良索性一頭撲到江水中，變成一條巨龍，順江而去。傣族人民為紀(jì)念李良，每年農(nóng)歷三月初三這一天，每家房屋清掃一新，撒上青松葉，并在選定的江邊或井旁，用綠樹搭起長半里的青棚，棚下撒滿厚厚的松針，兩旁放上盛滿水的水槽，午間太陽當(dāng)頂時，眾人穿行于棚間，相互用青松蘸水灑身，吉祥幸福的水相互潑灑，表示對李良的懷念和對新年的祝福。
放孔明燈是傣族地區(qū)特有的活動。入夜，人們在廣場空地上將燈燭點燃，放到自制的大“氣球”內(nèi)，利用熱空氣的浮力，把一盞盞“孔明燈”放飛上天，以此來紀(jì)念古代的圣賢孔明。潑水節(jié)期間還要進行劃龍舟比賽。比賽在瀾滄江上舉行。一組組披紅掛綠的龍舟在“堂堂堂”的鑼聲中和“嗨嗨嗨”的呼喊和哨子聲中，劈波斬浪，奮勇向前，把成千上萬的中外游客吸引到瀾滄江邊，為節(jié)日增添了許多緊張和歡樂的氣氛。
這些活動一直延續(xù)至今，成為辭舊迎新祝福吉祥的節(jié)日，成為傣族人民最重要的節(jié)日。
