I am looking forward to study in University of Portsmouth in the U.K this fall. As an essential part of visa application process, I understand that a true study plan is important for my further success.
Background
I am the applicant ***and I come from a small county near Shijiazuang, capital of Hebei province. I have been studying Management Science and Engineering in Southwestern Jiaotong University since September, 2012, when I just graduated from Northeastern University as a bachelor of Electronic Information Engineering.
My choice of studying IHRM in the U.K
I apply for the subject of International Human Resource Management for two reasons. For one reason, my tutor is directing a research on organizational behaviors in project management, which is correlative to HRM, but not the same. Choosing this major to study will help me to construct a better knowledge system. For another, which is personal and more important, I apply for it because I know what it means to me and what I am seeking for. I had little enthusiasm in my undergraduate courses and the IT industry. I once pondered over the question what kind of person I wanted to become. I want to be man with broad mind, broad vision and novel ideas. I also want to gain the capability to love and take responsibilities. I grew up in a traditional Chinese family. My parents are conservative. There is a wide generation gap between them and my 17-year-old sister, leading to misunderstandings and conflicts, similar to what I experienced in the early years. I understand the feelings of both sides, but always feel helpless to bridge the gap. How I wish I could have the wisdom to make us understand each other and love each other in an appropriate manner. My experiences arouse the motivation to learn management, especially something related to behaviors and mentality demands. It is great satisfaction and gratification for me to take good care of people’s demands thus organize them well. What is more, IHRM is one of the most promising and popular field, in which I think I could make a good living and further my career.
Human Resource Management includes recruitment, training, performance management, cultural construction and so on. It has been a vitally important branch of management since 1960s when the concept of “people oriented” was put forward by Japanese.
Nowadays top leaders pay more attention on the employees’ high level needs and cultural construction, rather than the working process and payment management. As we know, the modernizing of China started late, and the market economy reform began in the late 1970s. The management theories and practices in China are far behind that in western countries. The concept of “official rank standard” roots deeply in most Chinese state-owned enterprises. While in most small private companies, HRM almost equals hiring people. Most private companies in China survive for less 3 years while the state-owned surfer from poor efficiency. How meaningful and constructive it is for us to bring in advanced management theories and concepts from the U.K to make a difference. Furthermore, the age of economic
globalization has come. As far as I am concerned, IHRM contributes to organizing and optimizing human resource for especially transnational enterprises, leading to a win-win outcome for both the company and the society.
I favor Portsmouth University because its education combines theory and practice and focus on meeting social demands, making it become one of the most popular and satisfying universities in the eyes of Chinese students.
My overall educational goal
I have achieved good academic performance in Northeastern University and Southwestern Jiaotong University and I got a 5.5 overall in IELTS. I will retake the IELTS examination for a better score to meet the requirement. If I get the chance to study there, first step of my plan is to overcome the language barrier and adjust myself into the new environment, including new teaching methods, cultural differences and enhancing mutual understanding between the Chinese and other peoples. In addition, the most important thing is to learn the courses of IHRM related to improve my academic ability. Moreover, I plan to visit some transnational enterprises and learn about their management concepts and methods. I hope I can use limited time to acquire more advanced skills, methodologies and the professional knowledge related to my major.
Financial Support
My family cannot afford the fees studying abroad, so I am applying for the scholarship from the Chinese Scholarship Council, which is enough to support most of my tuition fee and living expenses. I am trying my best.
Return to China and Career Objective
After graduation, I intend to return to China and begin my work towards contributing to the development of the field of Human Resource Management in my country. Although there are numerous efforts towards addressing this issue, the number of specialists in this field of expertise is still sparse in China. This raises the necessity for a new breed of successful and skilled professionals to lead in the creation of this system. As a passionate and creative individual, I believe I am well-suited to contribute to overall efforts meant to fill this void in the job market. I aim to become a professional who can fulfill the position such as an HR in a transnational enterprise.
